Gluten free is the latest health buzz going around. You may have noticed more and more items at the grocery store touting themselves to be gluten free. So, is gluten free always healthy?
First, I do believe that most people are sensitive to gluten. I have seen it first hand in myself and my family and just about all of my clients. Unless you have a severe allergy, in most cases, a typical doctor will not test you and determine that you have a gluten intolerance. For many, the awareness comes when they eliminate gluten from their diet and see the difference. For some it means that their children’s behaviors change and tantrums occur less frequently, for others it may mean that gastrointestinal issues cease, or perhaps weight loss. (more…)

Although I have generally been in the habit of taking off my shoes in the house, the habit really stuck with me when I lived in Japan where taking off your shoes inside was a must. Now, I know exactly why!
My kids and I did a “Disgusting Science” experiment. I thought you definitely might be interested in the results.
We set up petri dishes and added some disgusting specimens to them. The specimens included dirt from the bottom of a shoe, armpit sweat, saliva, and a snot. These were kept in a cool, dark place and allowed to grow. (more…)

Do you want to know what is in your food? Do you believe it is important to know what you are putting in your body and what your children are putting into their bodies? I know I ABSOLUTELY do! Unfortunately, current government policies do not allow us to do so. In fact, the way federal policies are currently stated, it seems that chemical companies and seed companies have the upper hand as they can easily hide the facts. As someone who is very conscious about what I put into my body and what I allow my kids to put into theirs, this is a MAJOR concern.
The truth is, in the United States, companies can produce foods with genetically modified ingredients and not have to mention it. (more…)

What is GMO exactly? Well, GMO stands for “Genetically Modified Organism.” To create a genetically modified organism, the genes of a plant or animal are literally altered. In a laboratory, the genes of a completely unrelated organism are inserted into the genes of the plant or animal (i.e. like fish genes inserted into tomato genes… and yes this has been done). (more…)

I don’t know about you but I always have a hard time finding personal care products that are not harmful to my health. Most products on the market contain loads of harmful chemicals and additives that I have no desire to use and put on my body. Honi Boden, Holistic Eco-Beauty Expert & Public Educator and the founder of Holeco Life, has created a line of beauty and personal care products that are eco-friendly, safe, and exquisitely beautifying. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month but, I am not writing this post to honor the month. I am writing to honor all of the women who have experienced breast cancer. In doing so, I want to pretend that we live in a ideal world where there are some serious changes to “Awareness Month.” Here are the changes you might see in an ideal world: (more…)

Living on Long Island where rates are higher than the norm, breast cancer is something that really hits home. While the focus this month is on breast cancer awareness, I think we must remember something incredibly important… and, that is prevention. So, here are 5 things you can begin doing: (more…)

With school back in session, many parents may be stocking up on juice boxes and packaged fruit snacks. But, before you do, you may want to pay careful attention.
Recently, the Environmental Law Foundation, a non-profit based in California, tested juice boxes as well as packaged fruits (e.g. sliced paches, fruit cocktail, etc.). They discovered that many of the products contained lead levels higher than the daily limit set forth by the FDA. Unfortunately, organic juices were also found to contain lead as were those found in stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s (my personal favorite store!). See the full list below. (more…)

In the quest to stay healthy and minimize our exposure to toxins, store receipts are the latest thing to take notice of! A recent study conducted by Environmental Working Group revealed that store register receipts contained high levels of Bisphenol A.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy

resins. It is found in plastics and food container linings (including canned foods and baby formula containers). Bisphenol A is considered a toxic substance. Unfortunately, research has shown that it may be linked to (more…)
